The ADS NVMe (NoE) storage platform is built to capture the full potential of the NVMe protocol. From NAND and Optane, to the next generation of flash storage, Apeiron’s NVMe architecture is blazing fast even in comparison to other NVMe implementations such as NVMe-oF.

Unlike any other NVMe scale-out platform, the ADS is designed to take full advantage of native NVMe technology without compromise. The platform is engineered without any legacy storage bottlenecks whatsoever. With the Enterprise now utilizing many storage aware applications such as Splunk, Hadoop, Spark, SAP Hana, Cloudera, Hortonworks, Security Onion and more, there is no longer a need in these scenarios for additional I/O blocking technology slowing down storage and compute. Applications are much more efficient at managing storage, so it’s not necessary to have redundant services tying up resources. It just made sense to remove the storage controller, any associated storage management and networking software, as well as old storage protocol overhead that was typically needed to scale-out storage pools across captive server storage building blocks in a traditional SAN environment.

What We Did

Apeiron leveraged powerful FPGA’s and the NVMe protocol to fundamentally change the way in which data is accessed.  We engineered an architecture which looks and acts as an internal PCIe connected drive. Apeiron uses Intel FPGA’s on a PCIe connected HBA to encapsulate and move the native NVMe command through a massively scalable network.  The I/O is sent directly to the proper NVMe drive(s) and acknowledges that transaction to the application in less than 3 micro-seconds.  With such a low level of network latency, the Apeiron network is invisible to the OS.  The scale of SAN with the simplicity of DAS.

What Does It Mean

18.4 Million IOPS at 72GB/sec in a 2U array of absolutely linearly scalable storage to 1000’s of NVMe drives and 100’s of millions of IOPS packaged in the world’s only available native NVMe storage network. Literally plug another ADS tray into the network and add another 18.4 Million IOPS and another 72GB/sec in throughput.
